Peru exported quinoa worth more than US$90 million in 2022, with the United States, Canada, and the Netherlands as main destinations, authorities reported in commemoration of Regional Quinoa Day in Puno.
This cereal is known as the "golden grain of the Andes" for its extraordinary nutritional properties and rich content of protein and minerals, which are characteristics that make quinoa a product with great potential in the domestic and foreign markets.
The varieties with the highest export volumes in 2022 were white quinoa (US$56 million), red quinoa (US$16 million), tri-color quinoa (US$12 million), and black quinoa (US$4 million).

Medina explained that Sierra and Selva Exportadora promotes the consumption of these products by highlighting the nutritional benefits of foods such as quinoa and, by doing so, improves producers' quality of life.
The official also highlighted the work undertaken by the Regional Government of Puno in promoting production chains.
In addition, he stressed the importance of recognizing producer organizations, since quinoa "represents a significant portion of income in the region."
