The Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued an official statement following the events that occurred this morning in the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, which culminated in the capture of Nicolas Maduro. The statement reads as follows:

1. Peru reaffirms its commitment to the principles of International Law and the Charter of the United Nations regarding the maintenance of peace, the preservation of security, and the peaceful settlement of international disputes.

2. Peru is convinced that transnational organized crime constitutes a serious threat to hemispheric security and the stability of our states. In this regard, it has followed with particular concern the organization and criminal activities of drug cartels in Venezuela. The illegitimate government of Nicolas Maduro violated the human rights of the Venezuelan people and subjected them to torture, arbitrary and illegal detentions, destroying the rule of law and causing an unprecedented migration crisis in the region.

4. The Government is monitoring the situation of the Peruvian community in Venezuela. To date, no incidents involving our citizens have been reported.
