on Thursday affirmed that our country is more than equipped to protect itself from the impacts that might be caused by the occurrence of Global El Niño phenomenon.
Remarks were made during the delivery of homes to families affected by Cyclone Yaku earlier this year —within the framework of Valle Grande III Housing Project in Lima's Carabayllo district.
"We have purchased 416 goods to deal with this weather event; (these include) 163 motor pumps, 77 heavy machinery units, 150 vehicles, and 126 specialized equipment items (...) Added to this is what the Ministries of Agrarian Development and Defense have purchased; so, we are more than equipped to protect ourselves from Global El Niño, which we hope will not be so strong," she expressed.
The top official specified that this machinery will serve Tumbes, Piura, Lambayeque, La Libertad, Ancash, Lima, Ica, and Cajamarca regions, which might be affected by this weather phenomenon.
Likewise, the president announced that clearing and cleaning works have been carried out on more than 16 kilometers of rivers and streams in Lima to date "with the aim of further expanding the channel area, so that the landslide flows without damaging homes or crop fields."
"We have to work together, in that trust that first (means) to protect the lives of our children, parents, or grandchildren, who have the right to a safe life, let's help one another and show that we can live in a safe home," she stated.
Saving Lives
Moreover, 241 families were called to become beneficiaries of the "Saving Lives" government grant —107 of whom live in Lima and the remaining 134 in Piura.
"In 2024, we will continue to change the future of more families thanks to this grant; that is why we have identified families, around 4,000 in Piura, La Libertad, Lambayeque, Lima, and others, whose members live in risk areas," Mrs. Boluarte indicated.
"The Government has allocated S/335 million (about US$90.49 million) to fulfill this purpose and to serve families affected by an emergency; we rely on a budget to deliver 9,200 Mi Vivienda (My Housing) grants, but our objective is to reduce the housing gap," she added.
In this regard, Mrs. Boluarte said that next year 136,000 homes will be financed —120,000 in urban areas and 16,000 in rural ones.
Besides, the construction of 40,000 social housing units will be promoted. Thus, S/1.232 billion (about US$332.79 million) has been allocated through the Techo Propio (My Own Roof) program.
