18:40 | Lima, Apr. 12.

The President of the Republic Pedro Castillo on Tuesday evening took part in the start-up ceremony of the New Talara Refinery (NRT) located in the district of Pariñas of Talara province in Piura region.

The Head of State arrived in Piura region this afternoon to participate in the first part of the start-up tests.

Such tests are carried out by experienced professionals of Petroperu and contracting companies.

The ceremony also featured Chairman of Petroperu's Board of Directors Humberto Campodonico, as well as Energy and Mines Minister Carlos Palacios.

According to Petroperu, the new refinery —to be operated by experienced professionals from Petroperu and contracting companies— will ensure the continuous and timely supply of fuels in the country, preserving air quality and public health.

Technology

For its part, the Ministry of Energy and Mines (Minem) said that the New Talara Refinery (NRT) will use new technology, known as flexicoking, which will convert inputs of low economic value into high-value products such as gasoline and diesel of the best possible quality and friendly to the environment.

In addition, it has a processing capacity almost 50% higher than the previous plant, since it can process 95,000 barrels of oil per day.

Minem technicians explained that this new refinery will preserve and improve air quality by producing fuels with less than 50 parts per million (ppm) of sulfur and, after one year of operation, Euro VI fuels, with less than 10 ppm of sulfur, the highest quality standard in fuels currently worldwide.
