The President of the Republic, Keiko Fujimori, expressed her joy on Friday over the restoration of diplomatic relations between Peru and Mexico, highlighting the historic bonds of friendship that unite both nations.
"We are very pleased that Peru and Mexico have restored their diplomatic relations. We are brotherly nations, friends, with a history of many years of friendship," Fujimori stated from Chongos Bajo district.
"As I said before taking office, restoring those relations was one of our objectives, and that is what we conveyed to Foreign Affairs Minister Espa," she added.
The Head of State underscored that her administration is firmly committed to institutional governance, as well as to full respect for the rule of law and international law.
"As I have already said on several occasions, we are going to have a government that is very institutional and fully respectful of the rule of law. Therefore, under this principle of respect for the rule of law, and in accordance with international law, it was appropriate, and that is why we acted in this way, for the government to grant safe-conduct to Ms. Betssy Chavez," Fujimori explained.
In that regard, the top official emphasized that when one acts in an institutional manner, "one does not look at political affiliations; one acts in accordance with the law."
Following the restoration of diplomatic relations, the President said she hopes that the appointment of Peru's ambassador to Mexico, and that of Mexico's ambassador to Peru, can be finalized in the coming days.
Regarding the Mexican Government's position on Pedro Castillo, the new Head of State mentioned that the former president has a first-instance conviction.
She added that her administration respects the jurisdiction of the branches of government, especially the Judiciary.
Reconstruction of earthquake-affected areas
Fujimori made these remarks in Pumpuya, Chongos Bajo district, Chupaca province, where she traveled to oversee the State's response to the magnitude 5.4 earthquake that struck the area on July 18 and the magnitude 5.1 earthquake that shook the province again yesterday.
"We said last week that we were going to return, and here we are fulfilling that commitment, but also bringing results and making important announcements," she pointed out.
In that regard, the President reported the arrival of an ambulance for Chupaca, the installation of 20 school modules (domes), and the deployment of the Llamkasun Peru Temporary Employment Program, among other measures.
