on Wednesday reaffirmed her Government's commitment to creating conditions that will attract new investment, develop domestic industry, and turn that growth into jobs and better opportunities for Peruvians.
"Our commitment as a Government must be to continue creating the conditions to attract more investment, develop our industry, and ensure that this growth translates into better opportunities for Peruvians: job opportunities, opportunities for a better quality of life, opportunities for public works, opportunities for basic services, better-quality education, healthcare, and security," she stated.
The Head of State attended the commissioning of Peru's first float glass plant, located in San Vicente de Cañete.
The top official highlighted that, for the first time, the country will produce an input that it has so far had to import.
"This is a very important moment for our country because, for the first time, Peru will produce an input that we have so far had to import," Fujimori indicated.
"Consider how important this plant is. More than US$130 million has been invested, and it will have a production capacity of 600 metric tons per day," she added.
On her 17th working trip, the President underscored the positive impact of this investment on job creation.
During the construction phase, 1,000 jobs were created, while 800 to 1,000 permanent jobs are expected during operations, in addition to 2,000 indirect jobs.
"This means more industry, more domestic production, and export opportunities for Peru. In other words, not only will we no longer have to import glass, but with this plant, we will have the opportunity to export to the rest of the region," Fujimori emphasized.
As part of her visit, the Head of State toured the facilities and learned about the float glass manufacturing process, while also highlighting the incorporation of technology that meets international standards.
"Today, I am not just inaugurating a plant; for the first time, technology is being introduced to manufacture float glass under international standards," Fujimori pointed out.
"This is a source of great pride for Peruvians. We are seeing how private investment can translate into more production, more technology, more jobs, and new opportunities for our country," she added.
Regarding the impact on the domestic market, the President explained that production will initially meet demand from sectors such as construction, automotive, and industry, while also reducing reliance on imports.
"Having domestic production will allow us to initially meet, as I said, domestic demand," Fujimori underscored.
"And reducing our reliance on imports will generate savings of US$70 million. In other words, these resources that previously left our country will now remain in our economy."
Support for domestic industry
In turn, Production Minister Juan Carlos Requejo described the commissioning of the plant as a milestone for the sector.
Similarly, the Cabinet member reaffirmed the Government's support for investments that contribute to the country's growth and competitiveness.
"As a Government, we will support —that is the mandate given to us by our President— any sustainable industry that helps us grow and become more competitive in the global market," he stated.
In this regard, Requejo noted that the Executive Branch will continue working closely with the private sector to foster the domestic industry's development.
"I am confident that we will continue working together and supporting domestic industry so that it continues to grow year after year. Thank you very much for investing in Peru," he said.
Investment and development
In turn, Keda Peru General Manager Xu Chao stressed the participation of Peruvian workers during the implementation of the project.
Likewise, the executive said the operation will create opportunities for local suppliers of raw materials, transportation, and services.
"More than 1,000 people, most of them Peruvians, made this plant a reality. This achievement belongs to you," he underlined.
The general manager explained that the commissioning of the complex completes the construction phase, and the company is formally beginning operations as a Peruvian company with Chinese investment.
"Today, we are transitioning from being a project under construction to becoming a Peruvian company with Chinese investment that is now in operation," Xu Chao stated.
"We sincerely thank the Government of Peru at all levels, the neighboring communities for their support, as well as our contractors and suppliers," he indicated.
Moreover, the executive said the company will seek to contribute to Peru's industrialization process by training specialized technicians.
He also estimated that its operations will generate more than US$15 million in annual tax revenue.
