The President of the Republic, Jose Jeri, on Monday said that until the final day of his administration he will continue to uphold his core commitment to safeguarding public security and ensuring electoral impartiality.

Remarks were made during an event with the National Federation of Defenders of the Homeland at the Government Palace in Lima.

The Head of State recognized the organization members for their work in combating terrorism and contributing to the country's pacification, while noting that only the implementing regulations of the law recognizing their rights remain pending.

The Head of State said that crime is now the country's main enemy.

The top official said some of them continue "plotting from prison to destabilize the country" and reiterated that even members of his own team were threatened by criminals a few weeks ago.

"What was our response? We went to two prisons on a single day, for nearly 24 hours. We searched 6,000 inmates, and what we found is public knowledge, and clearly they did not like it at all," Jeri said.

"The enemy will never be pleased when authority asserts itself, because we had lost the principle of authority in prisons. The enemy knows how to operate, knows how to organize, and above all knows how to build external connections to achieve its objective: preventing the president from entering prisons," he added.

The President recalled that a few days ago he "became aware of new and more explicit attempts at intimidation," in which he was warned of more serious consequences.

In this regard, the Head of State indicated that just as terrorism was defeated in the past, today they will "fight crime, whatever the cost."

The top official stressed that he made that commitment on October 10 last year, when he took office.

Jeri added that he remains calm, saying that these acts of intimidation reaffirm that he is "on the right path."

"The only certainty here is that until the final day I remain here at the Government Palace, I will continue to honor the commitment I made at that time, and what citizens demand of me in the streets: security and impartial elections. That is my main task, and so far I have not stopped, nor will I stop," Jeri stated.

"Criminals held in prisons may keep threatening me, may keep planning whatever they wish against me; that is not a problem. I am prepared to continue doing what I have been doing, regardless of what it entails," he added.

The President noted that he hopes whoever is elected as his successor at the Government Palace will continue the effort to restore calm in Peru and will not give in to criminal gangs, while continuing to address the problem within prisons.

Finally, the Head of State thanked the National Federation of Defenders of the Homeland members for their presence at the Executive Branch headquarters.

He also pledged to make every effort to finalize the implementing regulations of the law that guarantees their rights.
