The President of the Republic Dina Boluarte reaffirmed her administration's commitment to the artisan sector, during the inauguration of the exhibition and sale of traditional art and crafts event titled "Mekenma Tee Aka, Ruraq maki" (handmade in English language).

"We have our artistic expressions as allies to show them to the world, and this is my commitment to you (...) From the Government, we reaffirm our support for the artisan sector that is dedicated to textiles, pottery, ceramics, carving, jewelry, costume jewelry, crafts made with leather, painting, embroidery, among other activities," Mrs. Boluarte expressed on Wednesday evening.

Thus, the Head of State reported that more than S/5 million (over US$1.32 million) was awarded to 1,025 artisans through the "Somos Artesanía" (We are Crafts) public contest during 2023, with the purpose of subsidizing working capital, modernization of workshops, development of new products, and for the enhancement of commercialization processes.

"Besides, government grants, each worth S/800 (about US$212), were delivered to more than 18,000 artisans who are mainly based in the cities of Juliaca, Catacaos, Puno, Cusco, Yauli, Bambamarca, and Cajamarca, among other districts of the country," she added.

Among other actions, the Executive Branch also awarded a subsidy of more than S/500,000 (over US$132,555) to 588 artisans who work at the center of productive innovation and technological transfer for the camelid (production) chain.

"This Government will continue working for you, with you, artisan sisters and brothers from our beloved Peru. Count on this clean-handed president to promote your products and place them in the world's showcase," she said.

The top official pointed out that in this "Mekenma Tee Aka, Ruraq maki" edition various workshops open to the public have been organized that aim to strengthen the dissemination of traditional Peruvian art from generation to generation.

Additionally, there will be a laboratory for co-creation of traditional art in the face of climate change, which is a space for learning, creation, reflection, and dialogue between school students and traditional artists.

Lastly, the president pointed out that a meeting of creative women will be held, whose main purpose is to strengthen the empowerment of female artisans, exchange knowledge and experiences, plus sell their artisan products.
