Peru's President attends solemn session marking 199th anniversary of Congress

12:43 | Lima, Sep. 16.

The President of the Republic Pedro Castillo on Thursday participated in a solemn session to commemorate the anniversary of the Peruvian Congress.

The ceremony was convened by Congress Chairwoman Maria del Carmen Alva.

The first Constituent Congress was set up on September 20th, 1822, in the chapel of San Marcos University, which was then located in part of the site currently occupied by the Legislative Palace.

The ordinary plenary session of the Congress of the Republic will take place at the end of this solemn session. This will be a continuation of the session suspended on September 9.

Congress' Agenda

According to the Congress' agenda, said session will address the decision of the Congress' Constitution and Regulation Commission on the interpretation of the question of confidence regulated in articles 132 and 133 of the Peruvian Constitution.

Likewise, it will review a bill —submitted by the Public Ministry— which seeks to authorize judges or prosecutors to decide on the final destination of dead bodies in case of a potential detriment to public order, and a similar bill introduced by the parliamentary bench of Alianza para el Progresso (Alliance for Progress).

In addition, the ordinary plenary session is expected to address the interpellation against Labor and Employment Promotion Minister Iber Maravi, for him to attend Congress to answer the corresponding questions.
