The President of the Republic Dina Boluarte on Tuesday asked Congress to treat the bill presented by the Executive Branch, which requests the delegation of special powers to legislate on matters of public safety, as a priority.

During the ceremony marking the 26th anniversary of the Peruvian National Police Public Safety Unit, the Head of State affirmed that she is confident Parliament will review the request expeditiously.

"I take this opportunity to respectfully request the Congress of the Republic to include —as a priority matter in its agenda— the bill on the delegation of legislative powers, which was issued at its reception desk on July 28," she said.

In this regard, the country's top official pointed out that the branches and institutions of the State must come together against delinquency and crime.

"We have to put all the needs of our population first. Most importantly, we have to work together and act with a sense of urgency. I am sure that this request will be addressed. Meanwhile, our police and this Government keep strengthening security across the national territory," she stated.

The dignitary emphasized that this request for legislative powers was made following the serious challenge that public safety poses, which affects our country.

Mrs. Boluarte underscored that this will result in the approval of a number of measures that will make it possible to fight delinquency and crime harder and effectively.

"We aim to issue more than 30 regulations that will be directly linked to public safety, so as to strengthen the fight against extortion, fraud, theft, robbery, and the criminalization of the use of stolen cellphones," she remarked.

"Likewise, in the case of the crimes committed by foreigners, as a restrictive measure, we will include the concept of expulsion —in cases of flagrante delicto— in the Criminal Code," the President added.
