The Peruvian Government takes with absolute responsibility the 2023 monetary poverty figures released by the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) and works firmly to reverse that result, Prime Minister Gustavo Adrianzen affirmed on Thursday.

"The Government's sole intention is for us to take these figures responsibly, without alarmism, but with confidence in ourselves," Adrianzen expressed.

"This year, we are working very firmly to reverse those results; that is why we are in Loreto (region) making announcements of investment, development, and progress," he added.

Regarding the dissemination of INEI figures, Adrianzen said avoiding the publication of results was not intended.

He affirmed that, for more than two weeks, these were known to the advisory commission, made up of a series of highly prestigious and representative personalities.

Concerning the results, the Cabinet chief specified that 2023 was a particularly unique year due to the protests that paralyzed the country for months, the preventive measures adopted against the phenomenon, and the impacts of Cyclone Yaku.

"They affected the normal development and governance of the country; we cannot overlook that 2023 was a year of recession, our economy fell; consequently, if we registered such a sharp drop in the economic growth process, its impact on poverty was to be expected," he stated.

However, Adrianzen indicated that the current economic figures are encouraging, because 2.85% GDP growth was registered in the first quarter.  Similar figures -he said- are expected to be registered in the second quarter, coupled with the new investments that have arrived in Peru.

"We are confident that the (poverty) figure will decrease significantly, but this requires investment, responsibility, and also solidarity; therefore, our special call is for an environment of trust to be created in Peru," he noted.

Moreover, Adrianzen affirmed that the Executive Branch will continue visiting regions and having active presence in development.

Remarks were made from Iquitos, northeastern Peru, where he participated in a development roundtable event for economic reactivation in Loreto region.
