Peru's Prime Minister Guido Bellido on Sunday morning arrived in Cusco to meet with peasant communities and address their demands over the Southern Road Corridor in Chumbivilcas Province.

"The Cabinet chief arrived in Cusco to take part in a meeting to address proposals for action on principal demands of peasant communities over the Southern Road Corridor in Chumbivilcas Province," the Presidency of the Council of Ministers (PCM) posted on Twitter.

He was joined by the heads of the Ministry of Energy of Mines (Minem), the Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC), as well as authorities from the Ministry of Environment (Minam), the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights (Minjus), and PCM.

Later, Bellido landed in the community of Huaninquiri —in Santo Tomas district of Chumbivilcas Province— to hold a work meeting.

The high-ranking official is planning to propose measures aimed at meeting the demands of the above-mentioned communities.

The communities living adjacent to the Southern Road Corridor are protesting against Ministerial Resolution No. 372-2018 MTC/01.02, which classified some nearby roads as national roads, noting that the flow of vehicles carrying mining material pollutes and produces adverse effects on their environment.

In addition, they affirm that MMG Las Bambas has failed to fulfil its obligations in existing agreements regarding social, environmental issues.

It is worth noting that on Saturday the Executive Branch —through resolutions issued by the Social Management and Dialogue Secretariat of PCM— set up a working group and a technical discussion forum to promote comprehensive development in Chumbivilcas.
