Peru's FA Min presents APEC 2024 goals at World Economic Forum in Davos

14:36 | Davos (Switzerland), Jan. 17.

Peruvian Foreign Affairs Minister Javier Gonzalez-Olaechea has presented the goals of APEC Peru 2024 —whose presidency has been assumed by our country for the third time— at the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting 2024 in Davos.

During his participation at the panel "Leading in the Pacific," along with senior authorities from the Republic of Korea, the United States, Papua New Guinea, and the Netherlands, the Minister of Foreign Affairs affirmed that Peru envisions APEC as the most commercially dynamic region in the world.

According to the Cabinet member, the APEC forum is the best opportunity —among the 21 economies that make it up— to cooperate on the increase of investment and trade.

"Because we understand that there is no chance of development if investment does not flow, if private companies are not assessed to their fullest extent, if conditions offered by each country are not respected," he added.

In this regard, Minister Gonzalez-Olaechea underscored that Peru's conditions for investment and trade are stable, on equal macroeconomic terms for national and foreign investors.

At the panel, the government official explained that APEC Peru 2024, whose priority agenda was approved by the 21 economies at a meeting held in Lima last December, has three goals: trade and investment for inclusive growth; innovation to promote transition of informal economic actors to formal and global economy; and sustainable growth for development.

He also indicated that the second goal "is a major challenge, because almost two thirds of the world's population lives in an informal and precarious situation."

Furthermore, the Foreign Affairs sector's head stressed the impact that the coming disruptive era will have on jobs. The following factors come together in said era: artificial intelligence, new ways of communication, and bio-engineering.

"We hope that APEC 2024 will go further to promote cooperation not only in the Asia-Pacific region, and can provide an opportunity to tell the world that we prioritize trade and investment, but we want to be part of global solutions," he added.
