At the event, the high-ranking official noted that the
COVID-19 pandemic forces the Ibero-American community to strengthen multilateralism for a sustainable, inclusive, and resilient recovery.
Likewise, the Cabinet member stressed that Latin America is united due to a shared history, which is articulated —at current times— by common values such as democracy, respect for human rights, and solidarity.
Furthermore, the diplomat highlighted cooperation as a pillar of the
Summit's agenda, and its impact on South-South cooperation, social programs, as well as on the development of cultural industries and scientific knowledge.
On this occasion, the event was virtually hosted by Andorra.
The focal point of the conference is the biennial staging (annual until 2014) of the Ibero-American Summit —a meeting of the highest political level. This meeting is coordinated by the Pro-Tempore Secretariat (constituted by the host country) in tandem with the General Secretariat.
The Meeting of Ministers of Foreign Affairs is the second body in order of importance in decision-making behind the Summit. This engagement is still held annually to follow up on the mandates issued by the Heads of State and Government during the immediately-preceding Summit.
