National Elections Board (JNE) Chairman Jorge Luis Salas on Tuesday affirmed that the dates set out in the electoral calendar for the 2021 general elections in Peru must be respected.
"The dates set out in the electoral calendar must be respected, that is the commitment that the JNE and authorities in the country have made," Salas said during the installation ceremony of the Tribunal of Honor of the Electoral Ethical Pact.
The electoral authority hoped that the autonomous work of the Tribunal of Honor would contribute to continue cementing democracy and that public opinion, as well as citizens, would recognize its efforts.
The tribunal is made up of Delia Revoredo, Oswaldo Hundskopf, Susana Baca, Gaston Soto, and Tarcila Rivera.
Salas explained that the Tribunal of Honor is the body responsible for ensuring respect for the commitments set out in the Electoral Ethical Pact for
the 2021 general elections, which promotes ethical behavior of
candidates and members of political organizations, as well as citizens in general.
"This pact has been agreed by political parties, so its strength lies in the consensus," the JNE head expressed.
Salas noted that the Electoral Ethical Pact initiative was implemented in 2005, and has remained active in the following electoral processes.
The JNE chairman emphasized that over 25 million voters demand further information during the campaigns and that political parties are responsible for prioritizing the use of virtual media and respect for health measures in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.
