Peru's former volleyball player Cecilia Tait was elected as a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) at an IOC Session meeting on Tuesday.

Following a vote, the Session elected the Olympian and former Congresswoman from Peru, Mrs. Cecilia Roxana Tait Villacorta, to the membership.

According to a press release issued by the International Olympic Committee, the Peruvian athlete was elected to the IOC membership as Independent Individual.

As stated on the IOC website, Tait participated in three editions of the Olympic Games: Moscow 1980, Los Angeles 1984, and Seoul 1988, where she won a team silver medal.

The ex-volleyball player was born on May 2, 1962 in Lima and played professionally in Japan, Italy, Brazil, and Germany, in addition to Peru.

Eight new members

The Session also elected Yael Arad (Israel), a retired judoka and the first-ever Olympic medalist of her country; Balázs Fürjes (Hungary), a keen sportsman and experienced sports administrator; and Michelle Yeoh (Malaysia), a producer, actress, and dedicated road-safety campaigner.

The list also includes Michael Mronz (Germany), an entrepreneur, keen sportsman, and active sports manager in his country; Petra Sörling (Sweden), the President of the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF); Jae-youl Kim (South Korea), the President of the International Skating Union (ISU); and Mehrez Boussayene (Tunisia), the President of the Comité National Olympique Tunisien.

Increased female representation

Thus, the Session elected eight new IOC Members, four women and four men, bringing the proportion of women on the IOC membership to 41.1%.

This is in keeping with the IOC's ambition to lead by example and increase female representation in governance structures.

The elections, held during the 141st IOC Session meeting in Mumbai, India, bring the total number of IOC Members to 107.
