The presidential candidate of the Workers and Entrepreneurs Party (PTE-Peru), Napoleon Becerra Garcia, died in a traffic accident in the Rumichaca area while traveling to the Ayacucho region for campaign activities.
The information was confirmed to Andina News Agency by Emely Silva, the party's candidate for deputy from Lima.
She said the group was notified of the incident by fellow members accompanying the presidential candidate during his campaign tour in the country's interior.
"We were informed a few minutes ago about the accident by fellow party members who are in the area and were traveling with him. They have notified us that our president (Napoleon Becerra) has died," Silva told RPP while lamenting the candidate's death.
According to her, Becerra Garcia was traveling to the city of Ayacucho in a private vehicle owned by Silva as part of his campaign agenda when the accident occurred.
The party representative added that some members of the delegation traveling with the presidential candidate were hurt.
She requested support from authorities to evacuate the wounded and provide medical care, as well as to transfer the candidate's body.
"At this moment, we ask the government to provide support so that the injured colleagues can be evacuated," she stated.
The accident reportedly occurred in a difficult stretch of road, according to initial reports received by party members.
In turn, PTE first vice-presidential candidate Winston Clemente Huaman said he received the news while carrying out campaign activities in Loreto region.
"We have just confirmed that our fellow party member and presidential candidate has died," he stated.
Likewise, Huaman requested support for the evacuation and treatment of those injured in the accident.
"We call for assistance so they can be evacuated to Lima as soon as possible," he said.
Huaman said five people were traveling in the vehicle, including the presidential candidate.
"There are also four colleagues who were injured and we are extremely concerned. (...) Senate candidate Segundo Alberto Pizango and deputy candidate Monica Huayllane were also traveling with him," he indicated.
The party leader added that other people traveling in the vehicle were injured and requested support for their medical care.
"There are also other injured people; we are extremely concerned. We call for assistance so they can be evacuated to Lima as soon as possible," he expressed.
