The European Union Election Observation Mission (EU EOM) on Monday deployed a total of 50 long-term observers to carry out their duties nationwide within the framework of the 2026 General Elections, its chief in Peru, Annalisa Corrado, reported.

This deployment began very early in the morning, as some observers had to take flights to different parts of the country.

"We met today for the deployment of our long-term observers throughout Peru, on the coast, in the highlands, and in the jungle. They began their work approximately one month before the elections, since the basis of our methodology is long-term observation," she stated.

The EU chief observer said their duties include meetings with candidates from all political forces, the electoral administration, the media, national observers, and the general public.

"They will not only observe in cities, but also in towns and villages, and their reports will be a key component of our conclusions," she pointed out.

Corrado explained that observers will report periodically on their findings in the field to the core team in the capital, Lima, and will remain in Peru until the conclusion of the electoral process, including a possible second round of the presidential election.

"We will have a total of 50 long-term observers in all regions of Peru and in the metropolitan area. Shortly before the elections, we will receive reinforcement from another 50 short-term observers and representatives of the embassies of European Union Member States and other partner countries," she stated.

She added that the EU Election Observation Mission team will be complemented by a delegation of European Parliament members.

"In total, the EU will have more than 150 observers on the ground on election day," she explained.

This electoral process will allow Peruvians to go to the polls to elect the next President of the Republic, Vice Presidents, Senators, Deputies, and Representatives to the Andean Parliament.

The General Elections will be held on April 12, 2026, with a potential runoff for the presidential race scheduled for June 7 of the same year.
