The electoral observation missions of the European Union (EU) and the Organization of American States (OAS) began Tuesday the nationwide deployment of their members, within the framework of the 2026 General Elections.

EU observers' deployment

EU Deputy Chief Observer Alexander Gray indicated that the final group to join his team consists of short-term observers, who are traveling today to different parts of the country to reinforce operations on election day.

Gray specified that the core team for Peru's General Elections is made up of 10 observer analysts and 50 long-term observers, whose deployment took place three weeks ago and who have been conducting visits to the Special Electoral Boards (JEE) and the Decentralized Electoral Process Offices (ODPE), among other activities.

In the days closer to the election, a delegation of EU Parliament Members, as well as diplomats from EU Member States, will join the Electoral Observation Mission's core team, he added.

In that regard, the deputy chief observer said that, by April 12 (election day), they will have more than 150 electoral observers deployed nationwide.

"Today, we are deploying our short-term observers, who arrived in the country three days ago, and have completed training to prepare for election day. Their role is to reinforce the efforts we have been carrying out in the country over the past two months," he explained.

Gray added that their work will continue until the end of the process, so if a runoff election is held, they will remain in Peru until the end of June.

He recalled that the EU has taken part in various electoral processes in the country since 2001 through its observation missions, after which it produces a comprehensive report and shares its recommendations.

"In Peru, many of the recommendations we have made over the past 20 years have been taken into account and implemented," the EU deputy chief observer highlighted.

OAS Electoral Observation Mission

For its part, the Organization of American States (OAS) reported that its electoral observation mission for the current process, led by Victor Rico Frontaura, began its final deployment today.

The multilateral organization specified that this mission has a technical team made up of more than 90 observers and specialists from 22 countries. It is the 24th mission deployed by the OAS in Peru.

As part of its agenda, the mission will hold meetings with various authorities, candidates, and civil society representatives, international community members, and other stakeholders, in order to gather diverse perspectives on the conduct of the April 12 elections.

"The mission's team of specialists will conduct a comprehensive and in-depth analysis of key aspects of the Peruvian electoral process in areas such as electoral organization, electoral technology, electoral justice, political-electoral financing, women's political participation, participation of Indigenous Peoples and Afro-descendants, campaigns, media and digital communication, electoral violence, among others," the OAS said in a press release.

They also reported that, once voting has concluded, the OAS/EOM will present a preliminary report outlining its findings and recommendations aimed at continuing to strengthen the electoral process.

The General Elections will be held on April 12, 2026, with a potential runoff for the presidential race scheduled for June 7 of the same year.

This electoral process will allow citizens to go to the polls to elect the next President of the Republic, Vice Presidents, Senators, Deputies, and Representatives to the Andean Parliament
