The working population in Metropolitan Lima totaled 5.187 million people between February and April this year, an increase of 2.7% (136,900 people) over the same quarter in 2022, the
National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) reported.
According to the technical report "Labor Market Behavior in Metropolitan Lima" —prepared with the Permanent Employment Survey (EPE) results— the population with adequate employment increased 8.4% (230,400 people) compared to the same quarter in 2022, but it declined 4.3% (-134,200 people) over the same quarter in 2019.
On the other hand, the number of underemployed people declined 4.1% (-93 million people) from the February-April period in 2021.
Nevertheless, when compared to the same quarter of 2019, the number of underemployed people grew 25.8% (450.6 million people).
Likewise, the working female population in Metropolitan Lima increased 4.8% (109,400 people), while the working male population rose 1% (27,500 people), when compared to the same quarter in 2022.
Moreover, the working population aged 45 and over increased 6.9% (119,700 people) and the population aged between 25 and 44 years rose 2.9% (72,900 people), while the working population under 25 years of age decreased 6.7% (-55,700 people).
Between February and April this year, the working population with higher education qualifications grew 24% (282,000 people) and the population with non-university higher education qualifications rose 17.5% (159,400 people).
In contrast, the working population with secondary level education decreased 10.5% (-265,500 people), while the population with primary education or less declined 8.9% (-38,900 people).
Unemployment rate at 7.1%
In the period of analysis, the unemployment rate in Metropolitan Lima was 7.1%. About 394,800 people actively sought employment in Metropolitan Lima.
