Peru came from behind to beat Venezuela 3-1 on the opening day of the 30th South America Women's Volleyball Championship in Ica on Wednesday.

The Peruvians dropped the first set 25-22 but bounced back to win the next three 25-19, 25-15, 25-15 to earn their first win of the five-day tournament.

Before the opening game, team captain Vanessa Palacios spoke on behalf of her colleagues who hope to give fans what they are looking for.

"On behalf of all my colleagues, we appreciate the welcome and we are committed to earning victory by focusing on each game we play. We are motivated by the encouragement of the public who are expected to attend in large numbers," she said.

In other results, title favourites Brazil crushed Chile  3-0 (25-10, 25-5, 25-4) and Argentina defeated Colombia 3-2 (19-25, 31-29, 10-25, 25-12, 15-11).

The six teams are fighting for one of two spots at the Women’s Volleyball World Championship that is scheduled to take place in Italy next year and the vacancy reserved for the continent at the World Grand Champions Cup that will take place in November this year in Japan.

The second vacancy at the 2014 Women's World Championship will be filled by the winner of the Confederacion Sudamericana de Voleibol (CV) Championship in October, comprising the four teams who placed second to fifth in the South America Women’s Championship.
