The Government of Peru —through the
— on Tuesday evening called on Venezuelan authorities to comply with the Barbados Agreements —signed last October and supported by the international community— in the face of the recent decision by the Supreme Court of Justice of Venezuela.
Last Friday, said Court ratified the political disqualification of Venezuelan presidential candidate Maria Corina Machado, who was chosen in the primary elections as the opposition candidate to face current Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.
Following the court ruling that makes her ineligible for this year's presidential elections in Venezuela, Machado ruled out quitting her presidential candidacy.
"Nicolás Maduro is not going to choose the people's candidate, because the people have already chosen their candidate, period," Machado told her followers.
For his part, the Venezuelan president pointed out in his weekly show 'Con Maduro +' that the imposed political sanction is firm and that the mechanism signed in October is being complied with.
In a statement from the
Foreign Affairs Ministry, the
Peruvian Government expressed its concern about this event, emphasizing the aforementioned agreements that have the objective of guaranteeing the holding of free and democratic presidential elections. It also called for respecting the people's will.
