The Decentralized Culture Directorate (DDC) in Cusco will create an area on its website so that tourists can reserve their turn to purchase tickets to the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu, one of the New 7 Wonders of the World.

"We will implement this through the website, so that they can reserve their turn to purchase tickets; we are working on that implementation," DDC-Cusco Chief Maritza Rosa Candia told Andina news agency.

The official stated that the conditions to welcome visitors who arrive in Machu Picchu Town —also known as Aguas Calientes— are improving, since 1,000 out of 4,044 (maximum capacity of people per day) tickets are sold per day there, at the Cultural Center.

"For now, we have already opened five counters and implemented barcode readers to expedite entry and exit procedures," and thus alleviate the long queues that have been forming since last July, she commented.

Long queues avoided

Rosa Candia explained that entrance tickets to the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu, in both the in-person (in the city of Cusco) and virtual (with 3,044 tickets available) modalities, became sold out until August 31, a situation that was resolved and, currently, visitors can buy their tickets normally through the website and counters.

Every day, between 3,800 and 3,900 domestic and foreign visitors enter the llaqta of Machu Picchu.

Following the last meeting of the Machu Picchu Management Unit (UGM) Technical Committee, held in Cusco, the DDC-Cusco head announced that the direct sale of 1,000 tickets in Machu Picchu Town shall be held one day before the visit, from 3:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., in order to avoid the long queues that have formed in previous days.

The DDC head also noted that visitors will be able to make a virtual reservation for the direct purchase of those 1,000 tickets up to 48 hours in advance and based on the availability of them, in order to pay for the ticket in person in Machu Picchu Town one day before their visit.

It should be pointed out that a waiting area has been arranged to seat 120 tourists, so that they can feel comfortable while purchasing their tickets.
