Peru: Tourists can now reach Machu Picchu by train via 'Amazon Route'

14:05 | Cusco (Cusco region), Apr. 6.

Tourists traveling along the Cusco–Quillabamba road opt for the “Amazon route” to enter the Machu Picchu archaeological park after PeruRail confirmed the resumption of service.

In a statement, PeruRail informed its passengers, travel agencies, tour operators, and the general public that "rail operations on the Machu Picchu Pueblo–Hidroelectrica route are resumed as of today, Monday, April 6."

"We adopted this measure in compliance with the notification from the concessionaire Ferrocarril Transandino S.A., confirming that on Sunday, April 5, the necessary work was completed to restore the track on the Machu Picchu–Hidroelectrica section, which had been suspended due to a mudslide that affected kilometer 115 in the Mandor area," the document stated.

Indeed, Ferrocarril Transandino reported that the necessary work to restore rail operations on the aforementioned section—suspended due to a mudslide recorded in the early hours of March 30—has been completed.

On that date at around 4:30 a.m. (local time), mud, soil, rocks, and vegetation swept away the railway tracks and a pedestrian crossing following heavy rainfall linked to the rainy season.

The first train to Machu Picchu Pueblo departed this morning at 6:45 a.m., while the return service left at 7:45 a.m., operating normally.
