Peru will require a visa application for Mexican citizens seeking to visit the South American nation for a short-term stay, the
Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced.
The measure is
based on the principle of reciprocity in force in relations between sovereign states, the Peruvian government agency said in
a statement.
The temporary visa requirement for Mexican travelers seeking to enter Peruvian territory was established after the Mexican government announced similar requirements for Peruvian nationals.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs indicated that this decision was made unilaterally by Mexican authorities, who stated that this requirement will be enforced starting April 20.
"Peru laments Mexico's decision, which undermines efforts to improve bilateral relations and affects the programmatic commitments assumed within the Pacific Alliance in order to facilitate the free movement of people between both countries," it said in the statement.
Mutual exceptions
Moreover, Peru said there will be exceptions to the new requirements —as provided by the Mexican government in the case of Peruvian visitors.
Thus, Mexican citizens who are holders of valid visas to the Schengen area, as well as visas issued by the United Kingdom, Canada, the United States, Australia, and Japan will not need a visa to enter Peru.
Furthermore, Mexicans who have permanent residence in the above-mentioned countries and in the other Pacific Alliance member states will not require a visa, either.
