Peruvian Prime Minister Juan Jimenez announced this week that foreigners with criminal records or ties to organized crime will be prohibited from entering the country.
The measure is part of a decree that gives that Department of Immigration the power to keep "undesirable aliens" out of the country.
Even foreigners with visas would be barred from entering the country, the minister said, adding that the government would also be able to deport foreigners who commit crimes in Peru.
Jimenez said convicted murderers, drug-smugglers, illegal miners, and foreigners involved in organized crime would not be allowed into Peru.
"The Peruvian law allowed the entry into the country of any person, with visa or without visa. Today, immigration can deny entry to a foreign person who has any kind of record over his conduct, whether abroad or in our country", Jimenez was quoted as saying by Peruthisweek.com.
This, he added, will "change immigration laws in the country" and said that policy is similar to those already in place in countries such as Spain, the United Kingdom and the United States.
