Peru has been elected to chair the Sub-Committee on Fish Trade of the Committee on Fisheries (COFI) of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), within the framework of its 20th meeting.

"This international leadership is a recognition of Peru's efforts to ensure the safety and sustainability of its fisheries and aquaculture resources," Production Minister Sergio Gonzalez underscored.

"We take on this challenge with the firm conviction that our active participation will help better position our producers in international markets and strengthen fisheries governance at the global level," he added.

The appointment marks a milestone for the region and international recognition of Peru's leadership in responsible hydrobiological resources management, fair and sustainable fish trade promotion, and global food security defense.

With this designation, Peru becomes a regional benchmark in fisheries and aquaculture governance.

This achievement was made possible through the coordinated work of the Permanent Representation of Peru to International Organizations in Rome, which fostered the country's candidacy, as well as the strong technical support of Produce and Sanipes, which have been implementing sustainability, traceability, and safety policies in fisheries and aquaculture.

During the 20th meeting of the Sub-Committee, the Peruvian delegation actively participated in all items on the agenda, highlighting national measures aimed at strengthening environmental sustainability, the economic development of fishing communities, and equity in value chains.

Sanipes Executive President Monica Saavedra thanked the international community for its confidence in Peru.

Likewise, she emphasized that fisheries and aquaculture are vital pillars for the country's economic, social, and food development, not only by generating jobs and opportunities, but also by contributing to global food security.

With this appointment, Peru reaffirms its regional and global leadership in fisheries matters and responsibly takes on the task of leading the Sub-Committee's work, promoting international cooperation and strengthening fish trade that is sustainable, safe, as well as inclusive for the benefit of all member states.
