Peru was recognized as the world's most desirable destination for adventure tourism, winning the gold award in the "Most Desirable Country for Adventure" category at the 2026 Wanderlust Reader Travel Awards.
The distinction was voted for by readers of British magazine Wanderlust, the Commission for the Promotion of Peru for Exports and Tourism (PromPerú) reported.
The ceremony took place on November 4 at the historic Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich, United Kingdom, bringing together representatives of the international tourism industry.
The award highlights the South American country's geographical diversity and range of experiences for travelers seeking nature, physical activity, and a connection with destinations, from the coast and the Andes to the Amazon.
Along the northern coast, surfing enthusiasts can enjoy internationally renowned waves.
In Ancash region, the Cordillera Blanca (White Mountain Range) offers trekking routes through mountains and snow-capped peaks.
In Amazonas, visitors can explore forests and discover natural attractions such as Gocta Waterfall.
Meanwhile in Ica, they can ride all-terrain vehicles across the dunes surrounding the Huacachina oasis.
During the ceremony, Wanderlust Editor-in-Chief George Kipouros highlighted the wide range of options Peru offers adventure travelers.
He stressed trekking routes such as Salkantay and Ausangate, the landscapes of the Cordillera Blanca, and exploration experiences in the Tambopata National Reserve, in Madre de Dios region.
"Peru offers visitors a genuine sense of discovery and experiences that inspire them to return."
International promotion
The award also recognizes PromPerú's efforts to strengthen the country's international positioning in priority markets and diversify its tourism offering by promoting destinations and experiences associated with nature and adventure.
Within this framework, the agency promotes specialized sporting events that help showcase Peru's natural landscapes and its potential for active tourism.
These include competitions such as the Ultra-Trail Cordillera Blanca, Machu Picchu Epic, and Adidas Andes Race, which attract athletes and enthusiasts while showcasing Peruvian destinations to international audiences.
Likewise, Peru Outdoor Expo—a business roundtable specializing in adventure and nature tourism organized by PromPerú and the Peruvian Association of Adventure Tourism, Ecotourism, and Specialized Tourism (APTAE)—fosters partnerships between domestic companies and international tour operators.
Its program includes business networking opportunities and familiarization trips for media representatives and industry professionals, aimed at showcasing destinations and tourism products beyond traditional routes. This year, its second edition was held in the Amazonas region.
