Peru: Sons of terrorist leaders captured in VRAEM

11:40 | Lima, nov. 13.

Interior Minister Vicente Romero on Monday confirmed the capture of four important terrorist commanders in the Valley of Apurimac, Ene, and Mantaro Rivers (VRAEM) area as part a joint operation conducted by the Peruvian National Police (PNP) and the Armed Forces.

"First, I want to congratulate the Counter-Terrorism Department, which has been working tirelessly and for a long time. I also have to thank the Armed Forces for their support. This intelligence work has been completed by said specialized unit within the National Police," he stated.

Below is a list of all the detainees:

-Victor Quispe Zuñiga, 24, also known as "Jose Jr.," alleged member of Shining Path’s Permanent Committee (son of Victor Quispe Palomino.

-Ivan Quispe Vargas, 23, a.k.a. "Hugo" or "Gabriel," alleged member of Shining Path’s Permanent Committee (son of late Gabriel Quispe Palomino and Flora Vargas Figueroa, a.k.a. "Vilma").

- "Romeo," 19, son of captured Julio Chapo).

- "Andres," 24, alleged member of Shining Path’s Central Committee (son of Emerson and Irma).

According to Romero, these arrests constitute one of the most powerful blows against the Central Committee of the Shining Path faction, as these subversives were to succeed Jose Victor Quispe Palomino —the main terrorist commander in the VRAEM area.

Moreover, the government official explained that this was an intelligence and operational effort undertaken by the Police, with support from the Armed Forces.

"We are trying to stop or get rid of those who confront law enforcement agencies; we are clear about it. The President has called for an aggressive fight against terrorism and organized crime, as appropriate. It is a long-term effort," he remarked.
