Peru has strong potential to unlock the value of reserves of critical and strategic minerals essential to global industry and the development of new technologies, Energy and Mines Minister Angelo Alfaro stated at the Annual Mining Convention PDAC 2026.

"We have precise instructions from President Jose Maria Balcazar and from the President of the Council of Ministers (Prime Minister) Denisse Miralles to exhaust all possibilities to attract new investment to Peru, a country that offers an attractive legal and tax framework for project development," he noted.

During his participation in Peru Day, attended by major global mining investors gathered in Canada, the minister outlined the country's reserves of key minerals such as copper, nickel, manganese, indium, cobalt, and lithium.

The Cabinet member underscored that Peru is a key player on the global stage advancing toward the energy transition, as it produces eight of the 17 metals required for power generation, photovoltaic and wind technologies, energy storage batteries, among other trends.

"Peru has significant reserves of strategic minerals, which give us potential for the production and industrialization of batteries, opening positive prospects for job creation and the generation of added value from our natural resources," he added.

During the conference "PERU: Geological Potential and Investment Opportunities," the minister provided details on the country's significant geological and mining potential along the eastern slope of the Andes mountain range.

The area has historically recorded high concentrations of rare earth elements and lithium, as well as cobalt, nickel, and other critical minerals.

He added that the Ministry of Energy and Mines (Minem) is implementing strategies to strengthen mining promotion, unblock additional projects, and introduce regulatory improvements.

Minem has the support of the World Bank to finance a program aimed at enhancing mining competitiveness and sustainability in Peru.

He also provided details on new technologies implemented by major mining operators in Peru at the Toquepala, Quellaveco, Las Bambas, Antapaccay, and San Rafael projects, as well as the Pucamarca beneficiation plant and the Ilo smelter.
