During the past week, less than 2,200 new COVID-19 infections were registered nationwide, which confirms the downward trend in terms of coronavirus cases for 12 consecutive weeks, the
EsSalud's Intelligence and Data Analysis Unit (UIAD) Head Dante Cersso pointed out that, following the third wave's peak registered during the third week of January (in which more than 352,000 new weekly cases were reported),
the infection rate has been reducing week after week. Therefore, figures similar to those reported at the beginning of April of 2020 —the year in which the pandemic began in Peru— were reached.
Regarding the death toll, the official specified that less than 150 deaths from coronavirus were reported during the past week.
"Following the peak of the third wave, in which unfortunately more than 1,400 deaths per week were registered, a downward trend is observed for 10 consecutive weeks," he pointed out.
Likewise, the EsSalud spokesperson stressed that there has been a significant decrease in the occupation of hospital beds linked to SARS-CoV-2.
"On average, some 1,144 hospitalized patients were registered in the health subsystem during the past week; it should be noted that the maximum (figure) registered during this year (end-January) was 6,867; that means admissions linked to this disease have declined by 83%," he said.
Regarding the occupation of ICU beds, last week some 379 patients admitted to ICUs were registered —well below what was registered at the beginning of February 2022, which had meant 1,358 people in critical condition. The current figure represents a 72% reduction.
Exhortation
The EsSalud Intelligence and Data Analysis Unit (UIAD) head said that although the country registers a decrease in cases and deaths from COVID-19, it is important that the population continues to protect itself. Thus, he called for the complete vaccination schedule against the dreaded disease to be complied with.
Cersso also stressed that, thanks to vaccination against COVID-19, deaths from this disease have been reduced from more than 5,000 (highest peak of the second wave) to less than 150 in the past week.
"We must not lower our guard since COVID-19 infections are still being registered. That is why it is important that the population complies with the complete vaccination scheme to be more protected against the coronavirus and its variants," he concluded.
