The COVID-19 Command in San Martin region has met to adopt measures aimed at strengthening prevention and control before year-end celebrations, considering the new coronavirus strain identified in the United Kingdom and its potential arrival in Peru.
According to the minutes of the meeting, the COVID-19 Command has decided to support the "Safe Christmas" plan implemented by the
National Police of Peru, which covers a series of operations throughout the region.
Additionally, peasant patrol groups pledged to implement measures for the control of the COVID-19 pandemic.
For their part, local governments committed to articulate efforts with peasant patrol groups, municipal patrol guards, the National Police, and the
Peruvian Army so as to enforce the provisions implemented by the Executive Branch, within the framework of the health emergency.
San Martin Region Governor Pedro Bogarin highlighted the general agreement to strengthen a communication awareness campaign on the correct use of face masks in public, frequent hand washing, and the social distancing rule of two meters.
The agreement also implies that the regional government shall provide local governments with a series of communication tools (videos, radio ads, and digital advertising) for the control of the pandemic.
Bogarin noted that these measures are taken in response to the new strain of SARS-CoV-2 which, according to experts, is 70% more infectious and transmissible than the original one.
Therefore, he added, prevention measures are essential in the absence of a vaccine, which is expected to be available next year.
The meeting included the participation of Provincial Mayors Tedy Del Aguila (San Martin), Gastelo Huaman (Moyobamba), Sister Valera (Tocache), Victor Lopez (Mariscal Caceres), Armando Rodriguez (Rioja), Carlos Ramirez (Huallaga), as well as Morales District Mayor Hugo Melendez, and Sauce District Municipal Manager Jorge Hoyos.
Also attending the meeting were San Martin Region Vice-Governor Noemi Aguilar, Peruvian Army Colonel Pedro Sanchez, National Police Commander Hector Del Valle, and a representative of regional peasant patrol groups, Oscar Nuñez.
