Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister Roberto Sanchez on Tuesday affirmed that a more dynamic gastronomy sector will lead to a greater tax collection this year, thus totaling S/160 billion (around US$41.4 billion).

"We could record a (global) tax collection of S/160 billion (around US$41.4 billion) in 2022. We see that the gastronomy sector ranks second in the recovery of sales," he expressed.

His remarks were made at the opening of the first international business roundtable on gastronomic tourism "Peruvian Culinary Experiences 2022."

The government official explained that said activity also includes services provided at hotels and restaurants throughout the country.

"But despite this recovery in sales, which is at pre-pandemic levels, we have seen a contradiction in employment, which remains at the same level as at the beginning of the pandemic. This is an indicator that does not lie," he commented.

Between January and August this year, the Central Government's tax revenue —net of refunds— reached S/108.304 billion (around US$28.065 billion), according to the latest report issued by the National Superintendence of Tax Administration (Sunat).

Business roundtable

As part of the first international business roundtable on gastronomic tourism "Peruvian Culinary Experiences 2022," Sanchez highlighted the interest of investors in identifying the opportunities offered by the gastronomy sector in Peru.

"This business roundtable will allow them to open discussion on the potential to be developed in our country," he remarked.
