Peru rains: More than 16,000 people affected between January and March 2026

Fifty-eight people have died between January and March this year due to heavy rains and the hazards caused by them, the National Emergency Operations Center (COEN) reported.

The figures also include two people reported missing and 16,095 affected.

In total, 22,000 citizens have seen their livelihoods impacted.

Regarding housing, 1,017 homes have been destroyed. Likewise, 6,269 of these properties have been left uninhabitable and 74,087 have been affected.

The heavy rains and floods have caused the loss of 16,448 animals and affected another 249,275.

Regarding agriculture, 1,576.87 hectares of crops have been lost due to rainfall, while another 11,725 hectares have been affected.


Damage to infrastructure

Concerning infrastructure, the COEN reported that seven health facilities have been left uninhabitable. Meanwhile, another 101 have been affected by the rains.

The events have destroyed 36 classrooms and left another 63 uninhabitable. In addition, 240 of these facilities have been affected.

The rains have also destroyed 163.6 kilometers of local roads and affected another 1,520 kilometers.

Similarly, 10.98 kilometers of local roads were destroyed, while another 171 kilometers of these roads have been affected.

Regarding bridges, 55 pedestrian ones have been destroyed and 77 of the same type have been affected.

Finally, 51 vehicular bridges have been destroyed by the floodwaters, while 157 were affected by them.
