The Public Ministry ordered the reinstatement of Prosecutor Rafael Vela Barba as coordinator of the Lava Jato Case Special Prosecution Group.

Vela's return was made official by Resolution No. 825-2024-MP-FN, issued by the Attorney General's Office, and published on Wednesday in El Peruano Official Gazette.

Similarly, the document establishes the designation of the aforementioned prosecutor as national coordinator of the Prosecutor's Offices Specialized in Money Laundering Crimes.

Vela, who is a superior prosecutor specialized in money laundering, has also been assigned to the Second National Superior Prosecutor's Office Specialized in Money Laundering Crimes.

In order to make these appointments effective, the resolution published on Wednesday provides for terminating the assignment of Prosecutor Elssie Garavito Chang, who is in charge of coordinating the Lava Jato Special Prosecution Group and the Prosecutor's Offices Specialized in Money Laundering Crimes.

A similar measure is established with respect to Prosecutor Liliana Briceño Aguayo's assignment to the Second National Superior Prosecutor's Office Specialized in Money Laundering Crimes.

Last November, Vela was suspended for eight months and 15 days by the Public Ministry's National Control Authority.

This month, the First Constitutional Chamber of the Superior Court of Lima declared admissible the precautionary measure requested by the prosecutor against this sanction, and ordered his reinstatement.

This has been taken into account by the Attorney General's Office to issue the aforementioned resolution.
