Peru: Presidential candidate Alfonso Lopez Chau casts vote

16:00 | Lima, Apr. 12.

Presidential candidate Alfonso Lopez Chau, representing Ahora Nacion (Now Nation), cast his vote shortly after midday in Lima’s Miraflores district, as part of the 2026 General Elections.

Lopez Chau voted at Maria de las Mercedes School, located at 241 Cahuide Street, near the 2100 block of Benavides Avenue.

He was accompanied by close members of his campaign team.

Dressed in a white shirt and wearing a hat, the presidential hopeful welcomed the decision by the National Elections Board (JNE) to extend voting hours by one hour, until 6:00 p.m., following delays reported at some polling places.

"We have spoken with ONPE staff and with European Union observers, and they have reassured us so far," the candidate said, noting that he made the relevant inquiries regarding delays in the setup of polling tables.

Lopez Chau heads Ahora Nacion's presidential ticket. His running mates are Luis Villanueva Carbajal, candidate for first vice president, and Ruth Buendia, candidate for second vice president.

According to the voter registry of the National Registry of Identification and Civil Status (Reniec), more than 27 million Peruvians are eligible to vote at 92,766 polling tables nationwide, in an election that marks the return to a bicameral Congress.

Voting began at 7:00 a.m. across the country. However, delays at some polling places led the Jurado Nacional de Elecciones (JNE) to extend voting hours by one hour, until 6:00 p.m., for the election of national authorities.
