At the virtual meeting, the U.S. senior official invited the Peruvian Head of State to the Summit for Democracy promoted by the North American country. It will be held on December 10, 2021.
For his part, the top official expressed Peru's interest in becoming part of the
Build Back Better World (B3W) initiative, which seeks to meet the world's great infrastructure needs.
Furthermore, the President recalled with satisfaction the statement by the United States which affirmed that Peru's latest elections were fair and democratic.
Within that framework, the U.S. Government commended "Peruvian authorities for safely administering another round of free, fair, accessible, and peaceful elections, even amid significant COVID-19 pandemic challenges," adding that those elections were a model of democracy in the region.
On that occasion, both authorities addressed the main issues on the bilateral and global agenda such as cooperation, the fight against COVID-19, economic reactivation, and the fight against transnational organized crime, among others.
The dignitaries highlighted the values and principles shared by both countries such as the defense of democracy, the strengthening of multilateralism, and human rights protection.
Peru-U.S. relations
The United States is one of Peru's main partners, being its main source of non-reimbursable cooperation and the most important cooperating country in the fight against COVID-19.
At the same time, it is Peru's second-largest trading partner, the top destination for non-traditional exports, its second-largest source of tourists, and the main migration destination for Peruvian citizens.
