announced on Monday assistance and support measures for families impacted by the rains, including the establishment of temporary shelters, the deployment of teams to drain water, as well as the cleaning, disinfection, and fumigation of affected schools.
"My solidarity, my support, and the Government's commitment to help you during these difficult times," Fujimori stated during her visit to Juan Pablo II Educational Institution in Lima’s peripheral Villa El Salvador district.
The Head of State said that, according to the National Civil Defense Institute (Institute), the initial registration showed that nearly 300 people and 62 homes were affected.
She indicated that, according to the National Educational Infrastructure Program (Pronied), 12 schools have been affected.
The top official reported that talks had been held with staff from the Ministry of Housing, Construction and Sanitation and with the sector’s head, who, she noted, remained at work until 3:30 a.m. (local time).
She specified that rains will continue over the next three days. Therefore, two six-inch water pumps and six Lima Potable Water and Sewerage Service (Sedapal) teams will remain permanently in the area until the main water system is repaired.
"Many residents said these incidents have occurred before and that this is a structural problem," she said.
The President said Sedapal had indicated that the problem would be fixed within one or two months.
The Head of State announced that the entity will be restructured "so that this type of problem does not happen again."
As an emergency measure, she said temporary shelters will be set up, while cleaning, disinfection, and fumigation works will be carried out at schools.
"It is very important for residents to remain alert and evacuate zones that have been affected," Fujimori pointed out.
The top official also said that she spoke with the Defense Minister, so that the Armed Forces could assist with cleanup efforts.
"To restore the area, all cleanup work will be carried out first, and we also thank all volunteer teams," she stated.
The President emphasized that disinfection and fumigation will subsequently be carried out, a stage that, she noted, will be handled by the Health Ministry.
Fujimori said she is in constant contact with the Education and Health ministers to ensure that classes resume in the coming days.
At the affected schools, classes will resume after cleaning, disinfection, and fumigation, while classes at schools in the three districts that have not been impacted will resume tomorrow.
She also highlighted that, together with the Development-Social Inclusion Minister and with support from the private sector, community kitchens are being set up and food is being delivered to support affected families.
Interpellation of Defense Minister
Regarding the possible interpellation of the Defense minister, the President said it would be premature given the short time that has elapsed since he took office.
"And regarding the interpellation, well, we have been in office for a little over two weeks, so we believe it is premature," she indicated.
The Head of State said she understood the lawmakers' role, but noted that the Government's priority is to deliver results and stand by the people, especially during difficult times.
"We understand that lawmakers have a role to play, but for us, rather than respond, it is about delivering results and standing by the people, especially during difficult times," she expressed.
After her remarks in Villa El Salvador, the President said she would head to Lima's Chorrillos district.
