Peru President calls for elections to be held on April 11, 2021

15:22 | Lima, Jul. 8.

The President of the Republic Martin Vizcarra on Wednesday signed the Supreme Decree in which he calls for general elections to be held on April 11, 2021.

In a televised address to the nation, the Head of State recalled that since he assumed the presidency in March 2018 —following the resignation of Pedro Pablo Kuczynski— he promised to complete his mandate by putting "all his effort to lead a frank, transparent, and honest administration, hand-in-hand with the people."

"Fulfilling my commitment, as I am a person of my word, I show the Supreme Decree to the country, and it says: General elections are called for April 11, 2021, for the election of the President of the Republic, Vice-Presidents, Congress members, and Peruvian representatives at the Andean Parliament. Today, before all Peruvians, I sign this legal regulation and formalize the call for elections," he expressed.

The top official specified that this call is within the statutory period, since the regulation establishes that it must be done with a minimum of 270 days before the electoral process is held. The legislation also affirms that it must take place on the second Sunday of April.

"We have little more than nine months for a change of authorities, and whatever we have to correct, let's do so, but let us do it well. Once again, I affirm my commitment, members of Congress; let's work together to complete the political reform and achieve the justice system reform (…)," he stated.

In this sense, the statesman explained that this reform should be done thinking not about the next elections, "but about the next generations."

Last May, Mr. Vizcarra reaffirmed his commitment to handing over his position on July 28, 2021, to his successor, who will be freely and democratically elected by Peruvian citizens next year.

Today's remarks were made in a televised address to the nation during the state of national emergency against coronavirus in Peru.

Initially set to last from March 16 to 30, the nationwide quarantine came to an end on June 30.

On this occasion, the President was joined by members of the Council of Ministers. The event was held at the Government Palace in Lima.
