During a recognition ceremony honoring women textile artisans from Qallwa, San Miguel province (Cajamarca region),
highlighted the contribution these entrepreneurs make to their families' economies.
"Through your daily efforts, you keep your households going through art and hard work. These certificates are also meant to serve as a keepsake for your families, (recognizing) that you are the driving force behind the family economy," he indicated.
The Head of State underscored the value of this type of weaving in preserving a traditional art made from natural fibers, despite the growing use of nylon in recent years.
"Some sought to put an end to the women artisans who make their bayetas, ponchos, and shawls; yet you have endured. I have seen the great female weavers, too," he said.
The top official highlighted the traditional and archaeological heritage of San Miguel province, noting that it is home to native cotton, Inca Trail sections, and a wide range of cultural assets.
He also noted that San Miguel province was the birthplace of former Lima Mayor Alfonso Barrantes.
As part of the recognition ceremony for the female weavers of Qallwa, the president presented each artisan with a diploma of honor acknowledging her dedication to this traditional craft.
The ceremony was held at the Government Palace in Lima on Monday.
It was attended by Ministers Edith Pariona (Women and Vulnerable Populations) and Fatima Altabas (Culture).
