announced on Wednesday the installation of 12 geogrids and 35 dikes in ravines across the Santa Eulalia district, in Huarochiri province, and Chosica district in Lima province, to help protect residents from possible landslides caused by El Niño.
The announcement was made during her unannounced visit to a warehouse in Santa Eulalia, where materials for prevention and slope stabilization works were being stored.
These custom-made materials had not been installed by the previous authorities.
"We have made the necessary arrangements, and the minister (Marco Vinelli) will present the proposal to the Council today so that we can proceed with deploying these 12 geogrids and 35 dikes," Fujimori told reporters.
The Head of State pointed out that heavy rains that trigger landslides normally occur from January to March.
The top official warned that the situation would be "catastrophic" due to El Niño. She said installing geogrids is therefore essential.
The President described the events of recent years as negligence, noting that although the geogrids had been custom-made for each ravine, they were never installed.
The Head of State indicated that the installation of geogrids would take between three and four months, requiring an investment of S/70 million (about US$20.67 million).
Funding will be coordinated by the Ministries of Agrarian Development-Irrigation and Economy-Finance.
"In the face of El Niño (phenomenon), priority is being given to protecting and safeguarding human lives. That is why desilting, riverbank protection, and flood defense works, as well as the installation of geogrids, are being carried out," Fujimori stated.
In that regard, the top official said the entire country is being monitored to enable a coordinated response to El Niño.
Although the Government has machinery and equipment, she underscored that regional governments and the private sector must also join efforts to carry out coordinated work.
Moreover, the President called on citizens living in high-risk areas to relocate so as to avoid potential property damage.
