The President of the Republic Pedro Castillo on Thursday announced the forthcoming approval of the National Policy for Digital Transformation by 2030, with the aim of providing internet to more than 33 million Peruvian citizens.

Mr. Castillo participated in the inauguration ceremony of the VII Ministerial Summit on Government and Digital Transformation of the Americas, which took place at Lima Convention Center.

Within this framework, the Head of State stressed that this meeting seeks to face one of the major challenges, which means putting technology at the service of people, building transparent States, as well as promoting the progress and development of peoples.

"I take this opportunity to announce that my country will soon approve the National Policy for Digital Transformation by 2030. This instrument will enable us to provide internet (connection) to more than 33 million Peruvians, link the digital economy to the reactivation and competitiveness of the country, strengthen the digital talent of our compatriots, and boost the culture of innovation, among others," he expressed.

In this sense, the top official indicated that he takes as a personal challenge the fact that, by the end of his administration, Peruvian children will have a quality education with adequate connectivity that allows them to access digital content.

For this reason, Mr. Castillo committed governors and mayors, as well as other authorities, to make this objective a reality. Meanwhile, he expressed to countries in the region Peru's firm commitment to contribute to digital transformation.

Priority

The president stated that since taking office, in July 2021, he has established digital transformation as a State priority, "but with equity, guaranteeing inclusive access for all fellow citizens."

"Today, the execution of digital transformation projects continues to consolidate; to date, we have exceeded 4 billion services on the digital platform, and more than 10,000 digital guidance services have been implemented on this platform, which generated savings worth more than S/9 billion (over US$2.301 billion) for the country," he affirmed.

Moreover, he reported that Peru climbed 12 positions in the United Nations digitalization index. At the national level, concerning the open data index, it is placed along with 10 other economies. It also ranks second in Latin America and the Caribbean in digital citizen participation.

"These results constitute recognition of the public sector, private sector, civil society, academia, international cooperation, and citizenry, because digital transformation is an irreversible process and a State objective," he added.
