Via X, the Presidential Office noted that the sanctuary represents the South American country’s history and identity. It also said it is a source of pride for Peruvians.
"On Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu Day, we pay tribute to a legacy that fills us with pride and unites us as Peruvians. A symbol of our history, identity, and greatness, Machu Picchu inspires the world and reminds us of the commitment to preserve this invaluable heritage for future generations," the post stated.
On July 7, 2007, Machu Picchu was declared one of the New Seven Wonders of the World as part of a contest organized by the New7Wonders Foundation.
