Peru: Presidency calls for reporting acts of violence against women

11:23 | Lima, Nov. 25.

The Presidency of the Republic has reaffirmed its commitment to support and empower all women, and called on them to denounce violence, within the framework of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

The Presidential Office issued a statement stressing this position on this occasion.

"We reaffirm our commitment to support and empower all women," reads the text published on its various social media channels.

In this regard, it is reminded that the objective pursued is to establish "a more just and violence-free society."

"Every action counts: accompany, act, and report," the Presidency stated. To this end, the 100 Hotline of the Ministry of Women and Vulnerable Populations is available.

This connection allows citizens to receive information, counselling, and emotional support in Spanish, Quechua, and Aymara languages 24 hours a day.

Women who are in a relationship that is considered toxic are also urged to seek support so they can get out of it.

Likewise, the Presidency urges citizens to acknowledge or report sexual harassment in the workplace, as well as to report any acts of violence against women to authorities.

International commemoration

The UN considers violence against women to be that which is perpetrated by the victim's partner or family, consisting of physical and psychological abuse, marital rape, or femicide. The list includes human trafficking (in its forms of slavery and sexual exploitation) as well.

These actions also include sexual violence and harassment, such as rape, forced sexual acts, unwanted sexual advances, child sexual abuse, forced marriage, stalking, as well as street and cyber harassment.

Similarly, genital mutilation and child marriage are considered to be forms of violence against women.

Statistics from the United Nations indicate that, last year, 51,100 women, including girls, died as a result of violence perpetrated by their partners or members of their own families.
