On behalf of various countries composing the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH), Peru took part in a historic UN Security Council session.

At the event, the Security Council decided to conclude UN Mission's operations in the island nation after over 13 years of activities.

In this sense, the UN mission will gradually draw down its military component during the following six months, thus finally withdrawing from Haiti by October 15, 2017.

Likewise, the Council decided to establish a successor peacekeeping operation: the United Nations Mission for Justice Support in Haiti (MINUJUSTH).

Said new mission aims at assisting the Haitian Government to strengthen rule-of-law institutions, support its National Police and engage in human rights monitoring, among other tasks.

During the audience, Peru highlighted the stabilization process in Haiti following recent presidential elections.

Such landmark gathering took place at UN Council headquarters on April 11.
