Peru's Foreign Affairs Minister Elizabeth Astete participated —virtually— in the meeting of foreign affairs ministers from the European Union, Latin America and the Caribbean, held under the auspices of the German Presidency of the Council of the EU and the European External Action Service (EEAS).

In her speech, Astete requested bi-regional support for the Peruvian initiative to create a multilateral financial mechanism to subsidize insurance to support countries' efforts in their negotiations to access the COVID-19 vaccine.

Moreover, she highlighted the importance of making efforts to mitigate social and economic consequences of the pandemic, giving preference to new cooperation and exchange of experience schemes linked to economic recovery and resilience strategies.

In addition, the Peruvian minister stressed the importance of addressing —in a consensual manner and with a sense of solidarity— the commitments between the European Union and the Latin American and Caribbean region on major issues of global interest.

The aim of the meeting is to strengthen ties between both regions and lay the foundations to enhance bilateral and bi-regional cooperation.

The proposal was submitted to the Member States of the Forum for the Progress of South America (Prosur).
