Peru participates in the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) represented by a multisectoral delegation at this important world meeting until November 12, the Peruvian Foreign Affairs Ministry has reported.

Peru's stance —as stated by President Pedro Castillo at the 76th UN General Assembly— is that if we do not achieve the goal of reducing the global temperature rise, humankind will face a dismal future.

"COP26 started in Glasgow today. Peru will participate (in this event) until November 12, represented by a multisectoral delegation so as to achieve concrete results in the fight against climate change," the Ministry said via Twitter last Sunday.

Likewise, it reported that —at the opening of the Conference— United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Executive-Secretary Patricia Espinosa warned that —if it is not possible to reduce emissions quickly and on a large scale to limit global warming to 1.5 °C— humanity will face a bleak future.

Along the same lines, the Peruvian Foreign Affairs Ministry reiterated that —as President Castillo pointed out at the 76th UN General Assembly— Peru deems it feasible to limit the temperature rise between 1.5 and 2 Celsius degrees —as established by the Paris Agreement.

As an expression of that commitment, the Head of State announced the declaration of a national climate emergency.

Lastly, the Ministry concluded by highlighting that Peru —in its capacity as President Pro-Tempore of the Independent Association of Latin America and the Caribbean (AILAC)— at the COP26 inaugural plenary indicated that the post-COVID recovery presents an opportunity to move forward towards a green, resilient, and inclusive economy.
