Peru participates in 25th session of UNPFII

12:05 | New York (U.S.), May. 4.

From April 20 to May 1, 2026, Peru took part in the 25th session of the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII), held at UN Headquarters in New York under the theme "Ensuring Indigenous Peoples' health, including in the context of conflict."

The Peruvian delegation took part in four segments of the session: the discussion on Indigenous Peoples' health; the debate on the six areas of the Permanent Forum's mandate; and the dialogue with Member States.

The delegation also participated in the annual review of the implementation of General Recommendation No. 39 (2022) of the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), concerning Indigenous women and girls.

In its statements, Peru highlighted the National Policy for Indigenous or Native Peoples to 2040, approved by Supreme Decree on April 9 of this year, as the first comprehensive, multisectoral, and long-term public policy aimed at ensuring the effective exercise of their collective rights in the country.

Likewise, it underscored that the measure was subject to prior consultation with eight nationally representative Indigenous organizations, in accordance with Convention 169 of the International Labour Organization (ILO) and Law No. 29785, making it the first national multisectoral policy in Peru to undergo this process.

Another key aspect highlighted was the inclusion of nine culturally appropriate health services under the regulation, including comprehensive care in areas at risk of exposure to heavy metals, the incorporation of knowledge holders of ancestral medicine, as well as specific services for Indigenous women.
