With the participation of delegations made up of officials and scientists from more than 150 States, including representatives from Peru and observer organizations, the 61st Plenary Session of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) took place recently.

The meeting was held in Sofia, Bulgaria, from July 26 to August 2.

The Peruvian delegation was composed of Environment Department Director, Ambassador Carmen Azurin, and Eduardo Calvo, who was elected Vice Chair of the Working Group III during IPCC-59 (July 25-28, 2023, Nairobi), which focuses on climate change mitigation.

On this occasion, the panel adopted important decisions to conduct the seventh assessment cycle of global knowledge on climate change, including its causes, impacts, and how to address it, taking into account scientific, technical, and socioeconomic issues related to this process.

Among the topics discussed, the IPCC approved the outlines for preparing a special report on climate change and cities, as well as a methodological report for measuring the Short-Lived Climate Forcers (SLCFs) that influence climate change.

In addition, a procedure was established for the three IPCC working groups to carry out their tasks within a timeframe that enables them to complete their reports in order to contribute to the second global assessment of the Paris Agreement implementation.

The future of life on the planet and the sustainable development of countries are linked to the objective of the aforementioned agreement, which is to limit global warming this century to an increase in the average global temperature well below 2 °C and, preferably, below 1.5 °C compared to pre-industrial levels.
