Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister Claudia Cornejo on Thursday affirmed that Peru has taken its first step on its quest to become a Smart Tourism Destination, by maximizing the use of technology and innovative solutions for the recovery of the tourism sector, with the sole objective of providing better services to domestic and foreign visitors.

The announcement came after the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in the tourism field with Spain's Industry, Commerce, and Tourism Minister Reyes Maroto at the TURESPAÑA stand during the International Tourism Fair - FITUR 2021.

Through this agreement, Peru will have access to first-rate information and will be able to work together with Spain's State Mercantile Enterprise for the Management of Tourism Innovation and Technologies (SEGITTUR), initially, in the development of a pilot plan that will provide a roadmap to be completed in three years.

Smart Tourism Destination

Five areas of action are contemplated in the SEGITTUR methodology to consider a tourism destination as smart: innovation, accessibility, technology, sustainability, and governance.

Currently, there are more than 250 destinations that are part of the Smart Tourism Destination Network (RED DTI): Andalusia, Asturias, the Basque Country, Medellin, among others.

"The boost to develop Smart Destinations in Peru will provide an opportunity to transform tourism into a more competitive, smarter, and more sustainable sector; promoting innovation and the use of technology in its processes," the minister stated.

It should be pointed out that this action is part of the National Strategy for the Recovery of Tourism in Peru, which proposes promoting digital transformation and the use of a methodology based on the concept of "Smart City," as well as its implementation in the medium term.

As is known, Spain pioneered the development of the Smart Tourism Destination model in the world, and this has been recognized by important international organizations such as the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the World Tourism Organization (WTO), the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC), and the European Commission.
